Step 1: Test the Fabric

Before starting any cleaning process, it’s important to test fabric for colorfastness. This ensures that the cleaning method won’t damage or discolor the material. Take a hidden area of the garment, such as the inside of the hem, and dampen it with water. Blot the area with a white cloth. If no color is transferred onto the cloth, then it is safe to move forward with the stain removal process.

Step 2: Scrape Off Excess Paint

If the paint is still wet, use a butter knife or spoon to gently scrape off any excess paint. Be sure to move in the direction of fabric grain and avoid spreading the stain. Once you’ve removed all excess paint, it’s time to start cleaning.

Step 3: Pre-Treat the Stain

Mix a solution of one part liquid laundry detergent and four parts warm water. Dip a soft cloth into the mixture and dab stained area of the sweater. Be sure to apply the cleaner in the direction of the fabric grain, and only use enough liquid to dampen the stained area. Avoid saturating the fabric, as this might cause dye to run and make the stain worse.

Step 4: Wash the Sweater

Once the stain has been pre-treated, wash the sweater in a machine washer with warm water and a gentle detergent. Allow the sweater to air dry, and check to see if the stain has been completely removed. If the stain is not gone, repeat Steps 2-4 until the stain is completely gone.
