Stain Characteristics

When it comes to removing paint off of surfaces, it’s important to first identify the characteristics of the stain. Specifically, you need to know what type of paint it is (water-based, oil-based, etc.), and how long it has been there. This will help determine which cleaning method works best.

Removing Dried Paint

If the paint stain is old and dry, first take off as much of the paint as you can with a plastic putty knife. Be sure not to scratch or damage the shoe. Then, on a separate piece of scrap fabric, apply a mixture of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Dip a soft cloth into the mixture, then slowly dab it onto the paint stain. The stain should start to lift. Don’t rub cloth too hard, or you could damage fabric of your shoe.

Removing Fresh Paint Stains

For fresh paint stains, it’s important to act quickly. First, use a damp cloth to remove as much of the paint as possible. Be sure to work from edges of the stain inward. Then, if necessary, apply a bit of dishwashing detergent and warm water and rinse off. If that doesn’t do trick, use a small amount of nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. If all else fails, take your shoes to a professional cleaner and they should be able to help.

Prevent Future Paint Stains

To prevent future paint stains, it’s important to always be aware of your surroundings and take precautions when walking through areas that might have paint on the floor. Wear shoes with nonporous materials like rubber or vinyl, and don’t forget to spray them with a protective coating every now and then.
