If paint has not dried yet, begin by blotting the stain with a paper towel to absorb any excess paint. Then, pour a generous amount of white vinegar onto the stain and let it sit for about 15 minutes. This will allow the vinegar to break down the paint pigment and release it from the fabric.
After 15 minutes have passed, apply a mild dish soap directly onto the stain and use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the fabric in circular motions. This should help break up the paint pigment and lift it away from the silk fibers.
Rinse the fabric off with cold water until the soap suds have been fully removed. Do not wring out the fabric, as this could cause the paint stain to spread and set further into the fibers.
Create a solution of warm water and gently-sudsing detergent – we recommend using a "delicate" or "hand wash" detergent – and soak the silk shantung fabric in the bucket or sink for around 30 minutes. This should help remove any remaining traces of paint from the silk fabric.
After soaking the fabric for 30 minutes, run cold water through it until all of the detergent has been completely washed off. Then, lay the fabric flat and allow it to air dry.
If the paint stain is particularly stubborn, try spraying hairspray directly onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, rinse off the hairspray and repeat steps two through five.
