Silk is a delicate fabric, so it’s necessary to take extra care when cleaning paint stains off of it. Depending on the type of paint and the time frame of when it got on the fabric, there are several ways you can tackle this issue. Here are some solutions to make removing paint stains from silk easier.

Solution #1: Immediately rinse with water

If the paint is still wet, the first step is to immediately rinse it with cold water. This will remove some of the paint. Next, place a paper towel directly below the stained area and dab out the remainder of paint with a white cloth dampened with water.

Solution #2: Use a Stain Remover

If the paint has dried, your best bet is to use a stain remover. Apply a small amount of the solution to paint stain and gently rub with a soft cloth or brush. Leave the solution for five minutes before rinsing it out with cold water. If stain persists, repeat the process.

Solution #3: Wash it in a Delicate Cycle

After you’ve removed as much of the paint as possible with a stain remover, you can put the item into the washing machine. Select a delicate/gentle cycle and use a mild detergent. If the stain is still there after washing, repeat the above steps.

Care and Maintenance Tips

Once you have successfully removed the paint stain, proper maintenance is important for keeping your silk in good condition and preventing future stains. Here are some tips:

  • Do not use hot water, bleach, or harsh chemicals on silk.
  • Do not wring out silk garments.
  • Do not machine dry silk garments; air drying is best.
  • Always read the instructions on tag of a garment before washing.
