When it comes to getting paint out of fabric, it's important to act quickly. The longer you wait to treat the stain, the tougher it becomes to lift it out. However, don't rub or scrub at the stain, as this can cause it to spread and set it deeper into the fibers.

Before you start treating a paint stain, make sure to check the care label on the item and follow instructions accordingly. Some fabrics may require special treatment. If no instructions are available, proceed with caution.

Removing Water-Based Paints

Water-based paints like acrylic or tempera can be tricky to remove, but still possible. Before attempting to clean stain, try to pick off any excess paint with a spoon or dull knife. Then, rinse the stained area in cold water from the backside of the fabric for several minutes. Next, soak the item for 30 minutes in a solution of enzyme-based detergent and cool water.

After soaking, take garment and gently massage the stained area with a soft brush. Finally, rinse the stained area in cold water again. If any paint remains, repeat the process until the stain is gone.

Removing Oil-Based Paints

Oil-based paints like enamel paints contain chemicals that can be difficult to remove from fabric. It's important to treat the stain immediately, as they tend to become permanent quite quickly. Before attempting to clean the stain, scrape off any excess paint with a spoon or dull knife.

Next, create a paste using a combination of equal parts liquid laundry detergent and warm water. Generously apply the paste over the stained area and let it sit for 15 minutes. Finally, rinse thoroughly with warm water and repeat the process if necessary.

Additional Tips

  • Always test a small, unseen area of the fabric before attempting to clean, to avoid damaging item.
  • To avoid paint staining clothing in the first place, always wear protective wearing such as an apron.
  • If all else fails, bring the item to a professional dry cleaner and let them take care of it.
