If possible, rinse away the paint when it first happens. Use cold water to help reduce color bleeding. If the paint is already dry, use a damp cloth or sponge to remove as much of the paint as you can.
Apply spot cleaner to the stained area and gently rub it in using a clean cloth or soft bristled brush. Allow spot cleaner to sit for up to 3 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
Fill a bucket or sink with warm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Place the stained area of the poncho in the soapy water and allow it to soak for 30 minutes. You may need to treat the stain multiple times in order to effectively remove it.
Once the stain has been removed, you can wash the poncho as you would any other clothing item. Place poncho in the washing machine and use a gentle cycle. Once it is finished, hang the poncho to dry or dry it flat.
Once the poncho is dry, apply a fabric protector spray to help prevent future staining. Using a soft bristled brush, gently brush over fabric to help restore its shape.
With patience, these steps should help to remove paint stains from your poncho. Make sure to always check the care instructions on the item before attempting any type of cleaning method.
