Clear Those Paint Stains From Your Leggings: A 3 Step Guide

Everyone has that one pair of leggings they just can't seem to keep clean. Oftentimes, that means dealing with paint stains--but don't worry, it doesn't have to involve a complete wardrobe overhaul. With just a few simple steps, you can be back to wearing your favourite leggings in no time.

Step 1: Test for Colourfastness

Before beginning any type of stain removal process, you should always test for colorfastness first. To do this, dampen a small corner of the leggings with a cotton ball and soapy water, and then dab area gently. Wait a few minutes, and then inspect the fabric to see if any of the color from the legging has been removed.

If there is no color bleeding, then proceed with the next step. If there is color bleeding, you will want to rethink your cleaning procedure and opt for a less abrasive option. Keep in mind that some fabrics are simply not meant to be washed with harsh chemicals or scrubbed with abrasive materials.

Step 2: Create a Paste

Once you’ve done a colorfastness test, create a paste out of powder laundry detergent and cold water. Apply the paste directly on affected area and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. After the allotted time has passed, gentle rub area with a soft cloth until the paste starts to break down. Then rinse out the area with cold water. Do not wring fabric as this may cause the paint stain to spread even further. Repeat process if needed.

Step 3: Treat the Stain with Detergent

If the paste didn’t completely remove paint stain, you can try treating it with detergent. Create a solution of cold water and mild laundry detergent, and then apply the mixture to the affected area. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Finally, lay leggings flat on a towel to air dry.
