Step 1: Identify the Type of Paint

The first step is to identify what type of paint is on the bag. Is it latex paint, oil-based paint, or a water-soluble paint? The type of paint will determine the cleaning method you should use.

Step 2: Blot to Remove Excess Paint

Once you’ve identified the type of paint, the next step is to blot it with a paper towel or cloth to remove as much excess paint as possible. Avoid scrubbing to avoid spreading paint further.

Step 3: Spot Clean with a Detergent Solution or Cleaning Product

If the paint is water-soluble, mix a solution of mild detergent and warm water, then apply it to the stain using a soft cloth. Work from the outside of the stain in, avoiding rubbing or scrubbing. If the paint is latex-based, use a product specifically designed to remove latex paint, such as Goof Off or Goo Gone. Always read and follow product instructions.

Step 4: Use Rubbing Alcohol on Oil-Based Paints

If you find that the stain is from an oil-based paint, use a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol to spot clean stain. Always work from the outside of stain in, and avoid scrubbing or rubbing.

Step 5: Rinse With Clean Water

After spot cleaning, rinse the area with clean water to remove any remaining residue. Blot dry with a clean cloth.
