Anyone with crepe fabric knows how delicate and difficult it can be, especially when it comes to stains. Paint stains can be particularly vexing, but good news is that it possible to remove them without damaging the fabric. Let’s take a look at a few tips and tricks.

Prepare the Area

The first step in removing a paint stain is to prepare the area around the stain. Make sure that it is free of dust and debris, then lay out a large piece of fabric to protect surface below. You could use an old handkerchief or a piece of muslin cloth. Place the stained fabric on top of the cloth.

Applying Solvents

Certain solvents can help to remove paint from crepe fabric, though it is important to test the solvent on an inconspicuous part of the fabric first. If the fabric is colorfast, then you can use any of the following items: denatured alcohol, mineral spirits, or acetone. Saturate a cotton ball or swab with the solvent and apply it directly to the stain. You may need to scrub gently with a toothbrush to work the solvent into the fabric. If the stain fails to lighten after one application, then repeat the process.

Hair Dryer

If the paint stain is particularly stubborn, you may need to use a hair dryer. Simply heat the stain with the dryer and keep repeating the process until the paint begins to break up. Once the paint is beginning to break up, you can dab it away with a clean cloth.

Dish Soap

If the above methods fail, you can try using dish soap on the stain. Make sure to choose a mild, non-toxic variety, and mix it with some warm water. Rub the soapy water into stain with a clean cloth, then soak up the excess with a paper towel. Finally, rinse it with water and dry the fabric.

Prevention

When working with paints, one of the best things you can do is take preventive measures to ensure that the fabric does not get stained in first place. Wear old clothes that you don’t mind staining, and cover furniture and other surfaces with plastic sheeting. If you do get a paint stain, act quickly; the sooner you remove the paint, the better chances of successfully removing it.
