The first step to removing any kind of stain is to identify the type of paint. Latex and acrylic paint are water-based, while oil-based paints are made with petroleum-based products. Knowing the kind of paint you’re dealing with will determine the best way to treat fabric.
Once you’ve identified the paint type, it’s time to take action. Take a dull knife or spoon, and scrape off any excess paint on the fabric. Work slowly, and be careful not to spread the spill. Once you’ve removed as much as you can, turn the fabric over and do the same on back side.
When you’ve scraped off the excess paint, it’s time to treat the stain. For water-based paints, like latex and acrylic, soak the stained area in cold water for 30 minutes. Then, mix a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid into two cups of warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the soapy mixture and gently rub it into the fabric, working in from the outside edge of the stain. Rinse with cold water, and repeat if necessary.
For oil-based stains, you’ll need to use mineral spirits or turpentine. Test an inconspicuous area of the fabric to make sure there’s no discoloration. Then, apply a small amount of mineral spirits or turpentine to the stained area with a clean cloth and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Blot the fabric with a dry cloth, and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.
Once the stain is gone, it’s time to clean the fabric. Launder as usual according to the care instructions, using color-safe detergent and warmest water temperature recommended. Check the fabric for any remaining stains before drying, and repeat steps 2-4 if needed.
