The success of removing paint stains from fabric depends on the type of paint used, the type of fabric, and how long the paint has been in the fabric. To begin process of removing paint stains, first determine what type of paint was used and what type of fabric is stained. Different mixes and types of paint require different approaches and materials, as do different fabrics.
Water-based paints such as latex, acrylic, watercolor, and poster paints are easier to remove than oil-based paints. To remove water-based paint, dampen the stain with warm water and blot with a paper towel or cloth. Then, apply a pre-wash laundry stain remover and machine wash clothing according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Oil-based paint stains are more difficult to remove. They require special materials and treatments. To treat oil-based paint stains, dampen the area with rubbing alcohol and blot with a clean cloth. Apply a pre-wash laundry stain remover and let it sit for fifteen to twenty minutes. Rinse with cold water and then launder according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you have tried all of the above methods and the paint still won't come out, it's time to call a professional. Contact a local dry cleaner who specializes in treating stains caused by paint.
