Step 1: Identify the Paint Stain

Before beginning, be sure to identify the stain in question. If you are unsure what kind of substance caused the stain, check label on the paint. It might be oil-based, acrylic, or latex paint—all of which require different methods for removal.

Step 2: Prepare an Appropriate Cleaning Solution

After you've identified the type of paint stain, prepare a cleaning solution that works best with the type of paint. For oil-based paints, use mineral spirits. For latex paint, mix together equal parts warm water and dishwashing soap. For acrylic paint, mix together equal parts Rubbing Alcohol and White Vinegar.

Step 3: Apply the Cleaning Solution

Take a damp cloth and dip it into the cleaning solution you prepared. Gently rub the cloth over the stained area. Don't rub too hard; this may cause stain to spread. Continue until the stain is completely gone.

Step 4: Rinse and Wash the Fabric

Once the stain has been removed, rinse the fabric under cool running water until all traces of the cleaning solution are gone. Next, hand wash the fabric in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Allow it to air dry afterward.

Step 5: Use Spot Remover as a Last Resort

If the above steps fail to remove the paint stain, then your last resort is to use a spot remover. Refer to the instructions on the product and handle with caution. Once the stain is gone, rinse and wash the fabric as instructed in Step 4.
