The first step in cleaning your stained backpack is to figure out what type of paint is involved and the severity of the stain. Different paints require different techniques for removal. It’s best to assess the damage before you begin the cleaning process.
If the paint isn’t too severe, simplest remedy may be warm water and soap. Fill a bowl or sink with lukewarm water and mix in a few squirts of mild dish washing liquid. Dip a cloth or sponge into the soapy water and apply it to the stain. Gently blot the area, being careful not to rub the stain in further. If the paint has lightened up, move on to the next step.
For tougher stains, try wetting the stain with warm water and rubbing an equal mix of white vinegar and baking soda into the affected area. Scrub lightly and allow the mixture to dry. If stain is still visible, you can then try scrubbing with a paste made from baking soda and water. Once the stain is gone, be sure to rinse area and allow it to dry completely.
Rubbing alcohol is an effective cleaning solution for non-porous fabrics, such as vinyl or plastic. Simply dab a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol onto the stain and allow the solution to sit for several minutes before scrubbing lightly until the paint is removed.
Once stain is removed, you’ll want to protect your backpack from further damage. Apply a waterproofing spray, such as Scotchguard, to repel water and protect against dirt and stains.
