How to Remove Different Types of Paint from Area Rugs

Most paint is water-based, meaning it dissolves with water and a cleaning solution. To remove water-based paint stains, start by blotting as much of the paint with a dry, absorbent cloth. Then mix a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with one cup of warm water, and use a clean cloth to dab it on the stain.

Oil-based paint, on the other hand, requires use of a solvent such as turpentine or mineral spirits. Blot the excess paint with a clean cloth, then apply just enough solvent to saturate the stain. Rub gently for 30 seconds, then dab away any remaining liquid with a clean cloth. Repeat until the stain disappears.

Tips for Cleaning Paint Stains from Area Rugs

  • Always spot test the cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first to make sure there is no discoloration.
  • Use a brush to work the cleaning solution into the fibers of the rug.
  • Be careful not to rub too vigorously, as this may cause the fibers to separate and the rug to pill.
  • Rinse the area with clean, cold water, let it air dry, and vacuum when dry.

When to Call a Professional Rug Cleaner

If your attempt to remove the paint stain was unsuccessful, it may be time to enlist the help of a professional rug cleaner. Professional cleaners have the experience and the tools to efficiently remove paint from area rugs. You could also take your rug to a carpet cleaning center, which may offer services for area rugs at a reasonable cost.
