Materials Needed

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Clean cloth or sponge
  • White vinegar
  • Olive or vegetable oil

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Use a clean cloth or sponge and a bit of dishwashing liquid to remove as much of oil pastel as possible. Be gentle on the fabric, to prevent any damage.
  2. Dampen a cloth or sponge with cold water and blot gently at remaining stain.
  3. Rub a small amount of white vinegar onto the stain and then rinse it with cold water.
  4. If stain remains, put a drop of olive or vegetable oil onto a cloth and dab gently at the stain. Continue dabbing and adding more oil until stain is no longer visible.

Additional Tips

  • It is important to work quickly when removing oil pastel stains, as they can set into the fabric if left for too long.
  • For particularly stubborn stains, you may need to repeat Steps 3 and 4 a few times before the stain is lifted.
  • When dealing with delicate fabrics, it is important to test any cleaning product on a small, unnoticeable part of the fabric first, before proceeding.
  • If you do not feel confident in attempting to remove the stain yourself, professional dry cleaning services may be able to help.
