Oil pastels are awesome art materials that usually come in several vibrant colors. Unfortunately, they can sometimes leave stubborn marks on our clothing. Voile fabric is especially prone to staining due to its delicate nature. Fortunately, these stains can still be removed with right technique.

Removing Fresh Oil Pastel Stains

If you noticed the stains only recently, you're in luck. Fresh stains are much easier to remove than old ones. The best way to do this is to act quickly and follow these steps:

  • Get a soft cloth and run it under cold water.
  • Gently dab the stained area of the voile fabric with the cloth. Avoid rubbing it as this will cause the stain to spread.
  • Once the area is saturated with water, apply some liquid detergent or stain remover onto the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing off.
  • Rinse the area again with cold water, making sure that all traces of detergent are gone.
  • If the stain is still there, repeat steps 2-4 until it is fully removed.
  • Finally, lay the voile fabric flat and allow it to air dry.

Removing Old Oil Pastel Stains

For older stains that have already set in, the process is a bit more complicated. Here's how to get rid of them:

  • Start by mixing one part white vinegar with two parts rubbing alcohol in a jar. Make sure that it is sealed tight.
  • Dab the stained part of the voile fabric with the solution using a cotton swab. Avoid rubbing the area as this may cause stain to spread.
  • Allow solution to sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off.
  • To make sure that all traces of stain have been removed, apply some liquid detergent or stain remover onto the affected area.
  • Rinse the area with cold water and lay the voile fabric flat to let it air dry.

Additional Tips and Tricks

  • Always be gentle when handling voile fabric. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the area as this may cause damage to the fabric.
  • If the stain does not seem to be going away, consider taking the garment to a professional cleaner for more intense cleaning methods.
  • Be sure to check the wrong side of the voile fabric for any traces of stain. It is always better to treat it earlier rather than later.
  • For particularly stubborn oil pastel stains, you can mix one tablespoon of ammonia with two cups of warm water. Soak the cloth in this solution for a few hours before attempting to remove the stain.
