Before cleaning the oil pastel stain, it is important to check the tunic’s label for care instructions. Depending on the material, you may need to adjust your method of cleaning. Make sure to use a gentle cycle setting when washing in a machine, and never use bleach or any other harsh chemicals.
The first step in removing an oil pastel stain from a tunic is to absorb as much of the oil as possible. Allowing the oil to sit any longer than necessary can cause it to set and become more difficult to remove. To absorb, try blotting the area with a paper towel or clean cloth, then cover with a generous amount of baking soda.
Once you have blotted and covered the stain area, you can soak tunic in cold water and 1 cup of dish soap. You can also add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to mixture, which will help break down the oil stains. Allow the fabric to soak for 1-2 hours before proceeding.
After soaking, rinse tunic in cold water and launder as normal. Use non-bleach detergent and a gentle cycle setting on the machine. Be sure to check tunic for any remaining oil stains before drying. If an oil stain still remains, repeat the soaking steps before trying again.
