What You’ll Need

  • Cloth Scrub Brush
  • White Vinegar
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Old Toothbrush
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Damp Cloth
  • Hair Dryer

Step 1: Scrub the Stain

Before treating stain, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve removed as much of it as possible. Use a clean, dry cloth scrub brush to work at the stain and try to brush off as much of the oil pastel as possible. Be gentle, though, since vigorous scrubbing could damage the fibers of the fabric.

Step 2: Apply Vinegar

Once you’ve brushed off as much of the oil pastel as possible, apply some white vinegar to the rest of the stain. The acidity of the vinegar helps to break down the stain, making it easier to remove.

Step 3: Pre-Treat with Detergent

Mix equal parts laundry detergent and warm water, and pour the mixture onto stained area. Massage mixture into the fabric with your fingers. Allow the pre-treatment to sit for a few minutes before continuing.

Step 4: Scrub with an Old Toothbrush

Take an old toothbrush (a new one is too abrasive) and begin to scrub at the stained area. This helps to further break down the oils and remove them from the fabric.

Step 5: Sprinkle With Baking Soda

This step is optional, but adding baking soda to the stained area can help to absorb any residual oil. You can also add a pinch of salt for extra absorbency.

Step 6: Dampen the Area

Mix some warm water and laundry detergent in a bowl, then dip a damp cloth into mixture. Then, dab the mixture gently onto stained area, taking care not to rub. This will help to lift the stain.

Step 7: Dry the Fabric

Blot the area with a clean cloth and allow it to air dry. If you’re in a hurry, you can also use a hair dryer set to low heat to speed up the process.

Step 8: Repeat as Necessary

If stain is still visible after following the steps above, repeat the process until it is completely removed. Remember to always test a small, hidden area first to make sure that fabric will not be damaged.

Conclusion

Oil pastel stains can be tricky to remove, but with a few easy steps, you can easily get your tie looking like new again. By scrubbing, applying vinegar, pre-treating with detergent, scrubbing with an old toothbrush, sprinkling with baking soda, dampening with a cloth, and drying fabric, you’ll be sure to get those pesky stains out.
