Oil pastels can be a great way to add some color to your favorite suede items, but they don’t always stay in place. Any little accident can lead to oily stains that don’t seem to come out no matter what you do. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to get rid of them.

Before you start cleaning oil pastel stains out of suede, the first thing you’ll want to do is to make sure the garment or item is still wet from the spill. If it’s already dried, use a damp cloth to wet the stained area. Then, take a clean cloth and gently dab at the stain, applying pressure. This will help to blot up any excess oil before you move on to the next step.
Once you’ve blotted up any excess oil from the stain, sprinkle some baking soda over affected area. Baking soda is an abrasive substance that helps to break down oils, so it’s a good choice for removing oil pastel stains. Let the baking soda sit for 10–15 minutes, then brush it off with a soft toothbrush.
Now that the baking soda has been brushed off, it’s time to use a cleaning solution. Choose a non-abrasive cleaner, like a suede cleaner or cleaner specifically designed for oil-based stains. Follow the instructions on the bottle and apply the cleaner to the stained area, using either a spray bottle or an old toothbrush. Leave the cleaner on the stain for 5-10 minutes, then use a damp cloth to wipe off the cleaner and any residue from the stain.
Once you’ve wiped off the cleaner, take a dry cloth and gently dab at the area until it is completely dry. Check for any remaining stains, and if there are any, repeat the steps above. Be sure not to saturate the fabric, as this may cause the stain to set further into the suede.
With regular maintenance and spot treatments, you should be able to keep your items looking and smelling fresh without having to worry about pesky oil pastel stains.
