Steps for Removing Oil Pastel Stains from Stockings

  1. If the stain is still wet, blot it with a paper towel. Try to remove as much of the excess oil as possible.
  2. Mix a solution by adding 1 teaspoon of mild detergent, 1 tablespoon of ammonia, and 2 cups of warm water.
  3. Dampen a cloth with solution and gently rub it against the oil pastel stain.
  4. Rinse the cloth, and then use it to blot stained area. Continue to do this until most of stain has been removed.
  5. Place the stocking in the washing machine, and wash on the delicate cycle with cold water.
  6. Dry in the dryer on the low heat setting.

Additional Tips for Cleaning Oil Pastel Stains from Stockings

  • If the stain persists after washing, repeat steps 2 to 5.
  • Do not use hot water, as it will cause the oil pastel to set more deeply into the fabric.
  • If the oil pastel stain is particularly stubborn and won’t come out, try treating it with hydrogen peroxide. Place a small amount on the stain and rub gently. Then rinse the area and wash as usual.
  • Never use chlorine bleach as this may cause discolouration.
