What You'll Need
- Laundry detergent
- White vinegar
- Water
- Cotton balls
- Bowl
- Old toothbrush
- Soft cloth/towel
- High-efficiency washer
1. Launder the Fabric
The first step is to check the laundering instructions for fabric. As Silk Dupioni has a delicate texture and color, it is best to use a gentle cycle and a low temperature setting. Then you will need to add a mild detergent to the machine. A good tip is to use a high efficiency washer, as this will make sure that detergent is evenly distributed and won’t leave behind any traces of residue that could act as a magnet for future oil pastel stains. Set the timer to the longest cycle, which should ensure that the detergent is properly activated and then rinse.
2. Make a Stain Remover
Now you will need to make a stain remover. This is a 3-part solution, so you will need to mix ¼ cup of white vinegar with one tablespoon of laundry detergent, and one cup of warm water in a bowl. Make sure that all the ingredients are fully combined.
3. Pre-Treat the Stain
Take a cotton ball and dip it in the cleaning solution. Then dab stained area and let it sit for a few minutes. Once dirt has softened, use an old toothbrush to scrub away the stain from fabric. Do this gently so that the threads of the fabric are not damaged or pulled.
4. Rinse & Repeat
After the stain has been removed, rinse the area with warm water and a soft cloth. If the stain is still visible, repeat the above steps again until it is fully removed.
5. Dry Fabric
Finally, hang the fabric up to dry in a well-ventilated room. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can cause the fabric to fade. Once it is completely dry, your Silk Dupioni should be back to its original condition - no oil pastel stains in sight!
