Oil pastels are popular due to their bright colors and creamy texture, but it can be tricky to clean up mess they make. Whether you're a budding artist or simply had a mishap with your favorite outfit, here's what you need to know about cleaning oil pastel stains from polyester fabric.
Using a clean cloth – or a razor if there is a large amount of colour on fabric – carefully scrape off as much of the oil pastel as possible. Make sure to do this very gently so that you don't damage the fabric.
Mix up a solution of laundry detergent and water in a bucket, making sure the detergent has dissolved completely. Dip a cleaning cloth into the solution and dab it directly onto the stain. Rub the cloth in circular motions over affected area to help loosen up the colour. Repeat this process until stain has faded.
Using a clean cloth, rinse the area where you applied the detergent solution with cold water. This will help remove any excess soap and leftover oil pastel residue.
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in another bucket. Using a scrub brush, gently work the solution into the stained area. Allow the mixture to sit for at least 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water. If stain persists, repeat this process until the stain is gone.
Once the oil pastel stain is removed, wash garment or fabric as normal. To prevent further staining, use a colour-safe detergent and add a cup of white vinegar to wash cycle.
With these easy steps, you can say goodbye to oil pastel stains on polyester fabric! Keep in mind that these tips may not work for all fabrics, so always test a small area first before applying any cleaning solutions.
