The key to success when cleaning oil pastel stains from pajamas is to act quickly. You should begin cleaning the stain as soon as possible after the accident occurs. Here are a few simple steps that will help you erase the stain.

Step One: Pre-treat the Stain

Before you start laundering your pajamas, you'll need to pre-treat the stain. Start by scraping off any excess oil pastel from fabric with a blunt object or brush. Once you've done this, dampen the area of stain with cold water. Then, use a paper towel to blot the area and absorb as much of the oil pastel as you can.

Step Two: Use a Stain Remover

Now it’s time to use a stain remover. Look for a product that is non-bleach and designed specifically for oil-based stains. Follow the directions on the product and apply it directly to the stained area. If the stain remover contains lye, be sure to wear rubber gloves! Once you've applied the cleaner, let it sit and work its magic for several minutes.

Step Three: Launder the Pajamas

Make sure to use the warmest water setting (check the care label) that's safe for the fabric. Add a liquid detergent to the water and stir it until it dissolves before adding the pajamas. Soak the fabric for 15-20 minutes before washing in a gentle cycle. You might need to repeat this process if the stain is still visible after the first wash.

Step Four: Check the Stain

Once the washing cycle is finished, check to see if the stain has been removed. If it has, you can simply tumble dry item. If not, repeat steps one through three again.
