Step 1: Pretreat the Stain

Once you notice stain, immediately pretreat it with a stain remover or laundry detergent. Gently massage the stain remover or detergent into the stained area to break down the oil pastel. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2: Soak in Cold Water

Next, soak the overalls in cold water. Let them soak for 30 minutes to an hour. This will help lift oil pastel off the fabric.

Step 3: Wash With Laundry Detergent

After soaking the overalls, wash them with a laundry detergent according to the instructions on the detergent’s packaging. Make sure to use cold water for the wash cycle to further prevent the oil from sinking into the fabric.

Step 4: Air Dry or Tumble Dry

Finally, air dry or tumble dry the overalls, depending on label instructions. After drying, check the stained area to make sure the oil pastel has been removed. If not, repeat Step 1.

Tips

  • If you don’t have any stain remover on hand, try using dish soap instead.
  • You should avoid using hot water and putting the overalls in the dryer—this could cause the oil to permanently set.
  • You may need to repeat the process several times to completely remove the stain.
