Oil pastels are usually made with pigment, wax and oil, which can be quite stubborn when it comes to removing them from the surface. The following steps should help you remove the stain without damaging the fabric:

  1. The first step is to scrape off as much of the excess pastel as possible. Make sure to do this gently and not rub it into fabric.
  2. Next, apply a dry-cleaning solvent like mineral spirits, baby oil, or WD-40 to the stain. Gently rub it in using a soft cloth.
  3. Wash the stained item in warm water with a mild detergent.
  4. If the stain still remains, mix three parts white vinegar with two parts liquid dish soap and one part water. Soak the stained area for 30 minutes.
  5. If the stain persists, try rubbing alcohol or rubbing acetone onto the stain. Do a patch test first on a inconspicuous area of the fabric to make sure the alcohol or acetone won't cause color fading.
  6. Finally, launder the garment as you normally would in washing machine. Don't put the garment in the dryer before making sure the stain has been completely removed.

Voila! You should have the satisfaction of knowing that you have successfully removed the oil pastel stain from your outerwear. It might be time-consuming, but it is worth the effort.
