Oil pastels are popular as art supplies, but they can be a nightmare when it comes to cleaning them off fabric. Organza is a delicate weave of silk or synthetic fibres, usually used in formalwear, and making it more difficult to remove oil pastels stains from it. However, there are tried and tested techniques which can help you get rid of the stubborn marks.
The first step to removing an oil pastel stain from organza is to pre-treat stain before washing. This is important as it helps to loosen stain and make it much easier to remove. Start by mixing a tablespoon of liquid detergent with two cups of warm water. Dip a sponge or soft cloth into the mixture and dab the stain gently. Be sure not to rub the stain, as this could damage the fabric.
If the pre-treatment didn't work, you should then try using a commercial stain remover specifically designed for oil pastel stains. Apply the stain remover onto the affected area and use a soft brush to work it into the fabric. Leave the solution to sit for 15 minutes, then rinse off with cold water.
If the stain remover didn't work, it's time to try soaking fabric in a solution of warm water and a gentle detergent. You should leave the fabric to soak for at least 15 minutes, or overnight if the stain is particularly stubborn. Once soaked, gently scrub the affected area with a soft brush and rinse in cold water.
Once you have removed the stain, hang the organza fabric in a well-ventilated area and let it air-dry. Do not put the garment in a dryer, as this could cause the stain to set permanently. If necessary, use a hairdryer on a cool setting to speed up the drying process.
