The best way to begin removing an oil pastel stain is by taking the mule off and placing it upside down on a paper towel or newspaper. This will help to keep the stain contained in one area and make it easier to clean up.
Once you have the mule set up, use a dab of dish soap and work it into the stain using a soft brush. This will help to break down the oil and make it easier to remove.
Once the soap has been applied and worked into the stain, dilute some white vinegar in water and use a cloth dipped in the mixture to dab at the stain. The white vinegar will act as a natural degreaser and help to further break down the oil.
The next step is to rinse the mule with clean, cold water. Make sure you rinse it thoroughly so that no soap or vinegar residue gets left behind. It’s also important to avoid rubbing or scrubbing the area too vigorously, as this could damage material.
After the mule has been rinsed, let it air dry completely. Once it’s dry, inspect the area to check if the stain has been completely removed. If there’s still some residue left behind, repeat the process until it’s gone.
If you’re dealing with a particularly set-in stain, try pre-treating the area with a spot remover such as Shout or OxiClean. You should always test a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first, however, before treating the entire stain.
For tough stains, it may be necessary to repeat the process several times. In addition, you may also want to consider using a fabric-safe stain remover such as Spray n Wash or Resolve for tougher stains.
