Oil pastel stains can be especially tricky to clean off since they contain wax and pigment that can easily stick to the fabric. However, it’s not impossible. Before attempting to clean off the stain, it’s important to keep in mind the material of your garment and select the appropriate cleaning method for its type.

Cleaning Wool Fabrics

If your formalwear is made of wool, start by sprinkling a liberal amount of talcum powder on the stain. This will help absorb the excess oil from the stained area. Once the powder has set for at least an hour, use an old toothbrush to gently brush away the powder and any debris that may remain. Blot the area using a damp cloth and white vinegar. Rinse well with cold water and air dry. Repeat this process if necessary until the stain has completely disappeared.

Cleaning Cotton, Linen or Synthetic Fabrics

For cotton, linen and synthetic fabrics, start by blotting the stained area with a paper towel to remove as much of excess oil as possible. Place a dry paper towel on the underside of the stain and use a hot iron to transfer the stain onto the paper towel. Be careful not to leave the iron on the fabric too long as this could cause further damage. Next, mix equal parts dish soap and white vinegar and use a cloth to apply the mixture to the stain. Gently rub the mixture into the fabric and then let it sit for about 15 minutes. Once done, rinse with cold water and allow to air dry. Repeat this process if needed.

Cleaning Silk Fabrics

Silk is a delicate fabric that requires special care when it comes to cleaning. Begin by wiping the stained area with a cloth wetted with cold water. Next, sprinkle baking soda on the stain, then moisten the baking soda with white vinegar and rub it gently into the fabric. You can also try adding a few drops of dish soap to the mixture. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes and then use a damp cloth to wipe away the residue. Once complete, rinse with cold water and air dry. If the stain persists, you can try repeating the process but be sure to use gentle pressure when rubbing the mixture into the fabric.
