What You’ll Need

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • White vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Soft cloths or paper towel
  • Ammonia
  • Solid detergent

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Use a soft cloth or paper towel to blot the area. Blotting can remove a lot of the excess oil without having to use any cleaning solutions.
  2. Make a solution of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar. Combine the two liquids in a bowl and stir until combined.
  3. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and dab it onto the stain. Allow solution to soak into the fabric for a few minutes.
  4. Use dish soap to scrub the area gently. Use a soft bristled brush or a toothbrush to really get into the weave of the fabric.
  5. Rinse the area with cool water to remove the cleaning solution. Blot the area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb any remaining moisture.
  6. Mix a solution of one tablespoon ammonia and one teaspoon of solid detergent in a cup of warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and dab it onto the stain.
  7. Allow solution to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water. Blot the area with a dry cloth to absorb the moisture.
  8. Allow the fabric to air dry completely before wearing or washing the item.

Tips for Success

  • Always test any cleaning solution in an unseen area of the fabric before using it on the stain to make sure it won't discolor or damage fabric.
  • If the stain is still present after following the above steps, you can try using rubbing alcohol on the area. Dilute it with an equal amount of cold water to help decrease its potency.
  • If all else fails, try taking the garment to a professional cleaner for assistance.
