Oil pastels are a wonderful way to express yourself in art. But when those vibrant colors end up on your favorite Dashiki, it can be devastating. Don’t worry! With a few simple techniques, you can get your Dashiki back to its original condition.

Materials Needed

  • Dry cleaning solvent
  • Dish soap
  • White cloth or cotton balls
  • Vacuum cleaner (optional)

Instructions

  1. If the stain is still fresh, quickly dab it with a damp white cloth.
  2. Mix a teaspoon of dish soap with two cups of warm water. Dip a clean white cloth into the soapy solution and gently blot the stained area.
  3. If the stain persists, use a dry cleaning solvent, such as carbon tetrachloride. Test a small, hidden area of the fabric first to ensure colorfastness.
  4. Apply the dry cleaning solvent with a clean white cloth and gently blot the stained area. Do not rub or scrub.
  5. Let the solvent sit for several minutes, then blot the area with a dry, white cloth or a dryer sheet.
  6. If the stain persists, vacuum the area to remove any remaining residue.
  7. Allow the garment to air dry and inspect for any remaining stains. Repeat steps 1-7 if necessary.

Tips and Tricks

  • Never rub or scrub oil pastel stains as this may actually spread the stain.
  • Always test any cleaning solution on a small, hidden area of the fabric before using it.
  • Do not attempt to launder the fabric until the stain has been completely removed.
  • Be patient! Removing oil pastel stains requires a steady hand and plenty of persistence.
