The first step in the cleaning process is to take a master's brush or a soft cloth and scrape away as much of the oil pastel color as possible. Being careful not to cause too much friction or damage to the canvas, sweep in one direction and be sure to collect all of the excess.
After excess color has been removed, lighten the stain by blotting the area with a dry cloth. This will help draw any additional residue away from the oil pastel color. Make sure to use a lint-free cloth that won't remove any additional color.
Once the majority of the color has been removed, mix a small amount of mild soap with water and spot clean the affected area. When using soap and water, be sure to use a damp cloth and apply light pressure while cleaning. Start from the outer edge of the stain and work your way inward to prevent further spreading.
Once the stain has been successfully lifted, rinse with clean water to remove soap residue. For stubborn stains, you may want to repeat this process a few times. Just be sure to let canvas air dry completely after each round of cleaning.
Once your canvas is completely dried, you can admire your artwork — sans oil pastel stains! You're now ready to start creating again.
