The first step to treating an oil pastel stain on cotton is to pre-treat it. Start by using a spoon to scrape away any excess paint from the fabric. Then, moisten a clean cloth with warm water and rub it over the stain to further loosen the paint.
Create a solution of warm water and liquid detergent, then apply it to the stained area. Allow the fabric to soak in the solution for 10 minutes, then use a brush to gently scrub the stain. Be sure to gently dab the fabric with a clean towel in between scrubbing sessions.
Once the stain has been treated and scrubbed, wash the fabric in cold water and hang it to dry. Repeat the washing process until the stain is removed. In some cases, a professional dry cleaner may be able to do a better job of removing stain if it is too stubborn.
To prevent future oil pastel stains, make sure that all of your supplies are located in an area that is separate from your clothing. If possible, wear an apron or other protective clothing while working with oil pastels to protect your clothing from getting stained. Additionally, avoid wearing clothing made of materials that are prone to staining, such as silk.
