Step 1: Gather Your Materials
For this project, you'll need some basic items:
- A clean white cloth or paper towel
- Laundry detergent
- White vinegar
- Borax
- Sponge
- Ammonia
- Woolite or other wool-specific cleanser
Step 2: Pretreat the Stain
Start by moistening the stain and blotting it with a clean cloth or paper towel. Then, gently rub laundry detergent into the stain, allowing it to sit on the fabric for 15-20 minutes before rinsing and blotting with a clean cloth or paper towel.
Step 3: Wash the Collar
Fill a bucket or sink with lukewarm water, then add a few tablespoons of white vinegar. Submerge the collar and let it soak for 30 minutes, agitating occasionally. After soaking, rinse the collar in cold water, then lay it flat to dry.
Step 4: Remove Stubborn Stains
If the stain persists, try soaking the collar in a mixture of one cup borax and one gallon of warm water. Let the collar soak for one to two hours, then rinse. For wool collars, mix one teaspoon of Woolite or other wool-specific cleanser with one cup of warm water and gently rub into the stained area. Rinse with cold water and repeat as necessary.
Step 5: Tackle Problem Areas
If you're still having trouble getting the stain out, try mixing one tablespoon of ammonia with one cup of warm water. Dip a clean sponge in the solution and gently rub the stain. Rinse with cold water, then lay the collar flat to dry. The stain should be gone, leaving your collared shirt looking as good as new.
