The key to successfully removing an oil pastel stain is to act quickly. The sooner you treat the stain, the easier and more effective the cleaning process will be. Start by laying the stained fabric flat on a clean surface. DO NOT rub or scrub the stain – this can cause the oil to spread further and can end up making the stain worse.

Steps For Cleaning An Oil Pastel Stain On A Button Down Shirt

  1. Use a paper towel or cloth to blot the stain. Do not rub the area.
  2. Sprinkle some cornstarch, cornmeal, talcum powder, or baking soda onto the stained area and let the material sit for about 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the powder from the shirt and use a damp cloth to wipe away any residue.
  4. If the stain is still visible, mix a few drops of mild liquid laundry detergent with a cup of warm water. Use a clean cloth to gently dab the detergent solution onto the stain.
  5. Rinse area thoroughly with warm water.
  6. Pat area with a dry cloth, then lay the shirt flat on a towel to air dry.

It's important to note that certain fabrics, such as silk or wool, may require an alternative cleaning method. If item can be safely washed in a machine, place it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with a mild liquid detergent. Do not add any bleach or fabric softener, as this could cause stain to set and make it impossible to remove.

If the fabric isn't colourfast, it's best to take the shirt to a professional dry cleaner. This way, you can be sure that the stain will be safely and effectively removed without causing any damage to the fabric.
