Begin by wiping up surface oil with a dry, clean cloth. If the material is safe to launder, you may then wish to launder with warm water and a gentle, bleach-free detergent. Check labels beforehand to ensure the garment is safe for laundering.
It’s important not to let oil pastel stains set, as this can worsen their effects. As soon as you notice a stain, begin spot cleaning.
There are several possible solutions for spot removal, depending on fabric of the garment. For most fabrics, you may use rubbing alcohol, a mixture of dish liquid and water, or a heavy-duty laundry detergent. Test a small area of fabric before attempting to clean the entire stain.
For wool and silk fabrics, use a cloth dampened with a mild detergent and cold (never hot) water. To be extra cautious, let a professional dry cleaner take on the job.
Once the stain has been treated with a cleaning agent, dab the area (don’t rub!) with a dry cloth to remove any excess product. If any color remains, repeat the steps above until it is gone.
If you have any concerns about a fabric’s safety when cleaning, use a mild detergent. Hot water, harsh detergents, and chlorine bleach can all damage delicate fabrics, so take special care and proceed slowly and cautiously when cleaning them.
