Oil pastel stains are highly pigmented, making them difficult to remove from fabrics like ballet flats. However, with some patience and the right cleaning method, you can easily get rid of these pesky stains.

Things You'll Need

  • Warm water
  • White vinegar
  • Soft cloth
  • Liquid laundry detergent

Step 1: Pre-Treat Stain

Mix together one part white vinegar and two parts warm water in a small bowl. Soak a soft cloth in the mixture and dab at the stained area. This will help pre-treat the fabric to loosen up the stain.

Step 2: Apply Liquid Detergent

Using a small amount of liquid laundry detergent, rub the stained area gently with your fingertips or a soft cloth. Allow the detergent to sit for a few minutes before continuing on to the next step.

Step 3: Wash the Fabric

Put your ballet flats in the washing machine and use the gentle cycle to ensure that the delicate fabric does not get damaged. Once the cycle is complete, check the shoes to make sure stain is gone.

Step 4: Dry the Fabric

Once the item has been washed, hang it up to air dry. Do not put it in the dryer, as the heat could cause the oil pastel stain to set into fabric permanently.

Step 5: Repeat if Necessary

If the stain is still visible after the first wash, repeat steps two and three until the stain has completely vanished.
