1. Act Fast

If you get an oil pastel stain on your ball gown, the best thing you can do is act immediately. The sooner you start tackling stain, the better the outcome will be. As soon as you realise that the stain is there, take off the top layer of the dress and inspect the area for any residue. If the stain has already set, brush away as much as possible with a soft brush.

2. Blot the Stain Away With a Cloth

Using a soft, dry cloth, begin blotting the area of the dress that has been stained. Place the cloth over the stain and press down gently, absorbing as much of the oil pastel as possible. You may need to repeat this step a few times to completely absorb all of the excess oil.

3. Use a Mild Detergent Solution

Once you’ve blotted as much of the oil pastel away as possible, you can begin cleaning the dress. Mix a mild detergent with some warm water and apply it to the stained area. Use a soft bristled brush to work the solution into the fabric and then rinse with cold water. This should help to lift away any remaining oil pastel residue.

4. Deodorise the Area

To remove any lingering odours, fill a spray bottle with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Spritz the area of the dress where oil pastel stain was and allow it to dry naturally. The white vinegar will work to neutralise any odours and help keep the dress smelling fresh.

5. Take Your Gown To A Professional Cleaner

If your gown is made from delicate fabric or has intricate details, it’s best to take it to a professional cleaner. They will be able to advise you on the best course of action for treating the stain and preserving the fabric of your gown. It’s always best to err on the side of caution when cleaning expensive or delicate items, so taking it to a professional is safest way to ensure your gown remains in top condition.
