The first step to removing oil pastel stains is to quickly blot up as much of the stain as possible. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to pick up whatever you can without rubbing or scrubbing the stain. This will help reduce the spread of the stain.
Mix a cleaning solution of warm water and gentle dishwashing soap. Dip a fresh cloth into the solution and use it to lightly blot the stained area. Do not scrub the area or the fibers will become matted down. Continue blotting the area until the stain has been removed.
Once the stain has been removed, rinse the area with clean water. Again, do not rub the area. Blot area until all of the soap residue has been removed. Allow area to dry completely.
If any traces of stain remain, apply a stain remover spray to the affected area. Follow the instructions on the package. Once the stain remover has been applied, allow it to sit for the recommended amount of time before wiping away the product with a soft cloth or paper towel.
Once the area has completely dried, vacuum up any loose dirt or debris. This will help restore the area rug’s original texture and color.
