The first step to cleaning an oil pastel stain is to blot it up with a clean cloth. Don’t rub or scrub at the stain! This may cause the oil to spread and make the stain worse. Instead, hold a clean cloth against the stain and press down gently to absorb as much of the oil as possible.
Once you’ve blotted up as much of the oil as possible, it’s time to pre-treat the stain. The best product for this task is a grease-fighting dish soap. Apply it directly to the stain and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Then, gently rub the stain to help break up the oil. Rinse the area with warm water before laundering in usual way.
After pre-treating the stain, it’s time to wash garment. Follow the instructions on the garment’s care label and use the warmest water temperature recommended. Place garment in the washing machine with a detergent specifically designed to tackle tough stains. Allow the cycle to finish, and then check the garment to see if the stain is gone.
If the stain is still visible after laundering, repeat steps above until the stain is completely gone. You can also try using a commercial stain remover product if the stain persists.
