If the stain is still wet, try blotting the area with a paper towel to absorb as much of the excess nail polish as possible, being careful not to spread it further. Once you've done this, dip a clean cloth in a mixture of water and mild dish soap and gently dab the stain until it starts to lift.
For dried nail polish stains, you'll need a little more heavy-duty action. Start by dampening the area with a damp cloth, then apply a few drops of nail polish remover onto the cloth. Gently scrub stained area using circular motions, and continue until all traces of the stain are gone. Note that you should use a remover that contains acetone, and be sure to test it on a discreet area of fabric first.
Once you've got rid of the stain, you'll need to take some steps to make sure it's completely gone. Begin by dabbing the area with a fresh cloth that's been dipped in warm water. Then rinse the cloth and add a few drops of laundry detergent. Use the cloth to gently rub the area, then rinse the stain and leave it to air dry.
The best way to avoid nail polish stains in future is to wear a protective barrier, such as an old shirt, apron or newspaper. You can also invest in a package of baby wipes to keep nearby and use to quickly pull up any excess polish before it has a chance to set.
