What You'll Need

  • Rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover
  • Soft cloths or cotton balls
  • Stain remover
  • Laundry detergent and water

Removing the Stain

  1. Start by taking fabric and rinsing it off with cold water. Do not put it in the washing machine yet.
  2. Test the rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover on a small part of the fabric that won’t show. This will ensure that you will not damage fabric.
  3. Once you’ve tested the area and you know it won’t cause discoloration, take the rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover and a cloth or cotton ball and gently rub it over the stain.
  4. Once the stain is gone, rinse the fabric with cold water and allow it to air-dry.
  5. If the stain persists, apply a stain remover to fabric and rinse it off.
  6. You can now put the item in the washing machine with laundry detergent and hot water.
  7. Once the cycle is finished, hang the fabric up to air-dry.

Prevention Tips

To help avoid future nail polish stains, you should always clean excess polish from your nails with a cloth before wearing clothing. Additionally, it’s best to wear an old shirt or jacket when you’re going to be painting your nails, that way if anything does happen, the old piece of clothing will take the brunt of it.
