Instructions for Removing Nail Polish Stains

  1. First, use a butter knife to scrape away any excess nail polish from fabric.
  2. Test a detergent solution on a hidden area of the cloth to make sure it won’t have any adverse effects.
  3. For light-colored fabrics, combine 1 tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent with 1 quart of water in a bucket.
  4. For dark fabrics, mix together 1 tablespoon of ammonia and 1 quart of water in a container.
  5. Soak the fabric in the solution for at least 15 minutes.
  6. Rinse the fabric off with cold water and then launder as you would normally.

Additional Tips

  • If the stain doesn’t come out in the water solution, try rubbing a small amount of hydrogen peroxide onto the stain. If you’re using hydrogen peroxide on a dark fabric, make sure to test the solution on a small, discreet area of the clothing first.
  • If the stain is still visible, try applying a small amount of rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover directly to the stain. Again, test on a hidden section of the fabric first to ensure it won’t damage material.
  • Another option is to dab some white vinegar onto the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes before laundering.
  • If you’re dealing with silk, consider taking the garment to a dry cleaner for optimal results.
