Nail polish stains can be a real eyesore! Unfortunately, they can also be quite stubborn — but there is hope. Here are several methods you can use to remove nail polish stains from Tommy Hilfiger clothing.
Method 1: Rubbing Alcohol
Soaking the stained area in rubbing alcohol is a good place to start. It’s a relatively non-toxic solution that can break down the remnants of nail polish. To try this method:
- Mix equal parts rubbing alcohol and cold water in a bowl.
- Dampen a cloth or cotton ball with the solution and gently blot it onto the stain. Don’t rub, or you may spread stain further.
- Let sit for 10 minutes.
- Rinse with cold water.
- Repeat until the stain has been removed.
Method 2: Nail Polish Remover
Nail polish remover is designed to break down nail polish, so you can use it on stains as well. Make sure to use a non-acetone variety and always test any solution on an inconspicuous part of the garment first.
- Apply a small dab of nail polish remover to a cotton ball or cloth.
- Gently blot the stained area. Don’t rub, or you may spread the stain further.
- Leave for 10 minutes.
- Rinse the area with cold water.
- Repeat until the stain has been removed.
Method 3: Dishwashing Detergent
If the previous two methods don’t work, dishwashing detergent may do the trick. Here’s how:
- Mix 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with 2 cups of warm water in a bowl.
- Dab the stained area with a cloth soaked in the mixture.
- Leave for 10 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water.
- Repeat until stain has been removed.
Additional Tips
- Don’t rub the stain — continually blot it instead.
- Be sure to rinse the area with cold water after applying any solution.
- If you’re using a chemical cleaner, always test it on a hidden part of the garment first to make sure it won’t cause discoloration.
- If the stain still won’t come out, try adding a little laundry detergent to the solution.
