If you’ve just spilled nail polish on your sleepwear and it’s still wet, you’re in luck! You can easily remove the stain by first blotting up as much of the polish as possible using clean rags or paper towels. Once the initial spread of the nail polish is blotted, use rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover to dab at the stained area. If either the rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover isn't enough, you can also try a mix of one part liquid dish soap, one part white vinegar and one part warm water. Soak the area in this mixture for 10 minutes before removing it and washing the garment as normal.
If the nail polish has dried, process to remove it is slightly different. To tackle a dried nail polish stain, you’ll need to place the sleepwear into a bowl filled with lukewarm water. If the stain is particularly stubborn you may want to let it soak in the solution for up to an hour. After soaking, treat the area with a small amount of detergent and gently rub the area with your fingers. Finally, rinse with warm water and hang to dry.
For particularly tough nail polish stains, you might need to use a laundry additive to help remove the stain. Before washing, pretreat the stain with a laundry booster that contains enzymes such as Oxyclean. Place the garment in the washing machine and add laundry booster as you normally would. Follow up with a normal washing cycle and check to see if the stain is gone.
The best way to avoid nail polish stains is to avoid wearing sleepwear while applying nail polish. Opt to wear an old t-shirt or smock while painting your nails. This will protect any clothing, bedding or furniture from being accidentally stained.
