Supplies Needed

  • Cotton balls, paper towels, or a soft cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dish-washing detergent
  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar

Steps for Removing Nail Polish Stains from Skirts

  1. Identify the type of fabric your skirt is made from. Not all fabrics can be treated same way. Fabrics such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic are considered synthetic fabrics, and natural fabrics such as silk, wool, and cotton should also be treated differently.
  2. For synthetic fabrics, start by soaking some cotton in rubbing alcohol and dab it onto the stained area to break down the nail polish. Make sure not to rub the fabric too hard to avoid damaging it.
  3. Once the stain has been soaked with rubbing alcohol, rinse the fabric with warm water and dab some dish-washing detergent onto the spot. Rinse the fabric again to remove the detergent. Repeat this step if needed.
  4. For natural fabrics, use white vinegar to get rid of the nail polish. Soak a cotton ball with white vinegar and dab it onto the spot to break down stain. Rinse with warm water afterwards.
  5. Finally, wash skirt in the washing machine with laundry detergent. Hang the skirt out to air dry or use a low or delicate setting on the dryer.

Tips and Warnings

  • Test any solution on a small, inconspicuous part of the fabric to make sure it doesn't damage or discolor the fabric.
  • Be careful not to scrub the fabric too hard when getting rid of the stain, as it can cause fabric to break down.
