The first step to cleaning nail polish from silk shantung is to gather the supplies you'll need. You will need white paper towels, a dry-cleaning solvent, a soft brush, a small bowl, and two cups of cold water.
To make sure that dry-cleaning solvent won't damage your silk shantung, do a spot test first. To do this, start by dipping the corner of a paper towel into the solvent and then dab it onto an inconspicuous area of the fabric. If solvent leaves a mark, dilute with cold water and try again.
Once you've confirmed that it won't damage your garment, you can start actual cleaning. Gently dab the solvent onto the stained area using the paper towel. Let the solvent sit on the stain for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.
After allowing the solvent to sit on the stain for a few minutes, you're ready to start scrubbing. Use a soft brush and gently scrub the stained area. Make sure to use circular motions and not to scrub too hard, as this can damage the fabric.
Once the stain has been scrubbed, rinse the area with cold water. Use a paper towel or a damp cloth to absorb remaining liquid.
If the stain is still visible after scrubbing and rinsing, repeat steps 4 and 5 until the stain is gone. It may take a few tries before you get desired results.
Cleaning nail polish from silk shantung can be a challenge, but with the right supplies and a bit of patience, you should be able to remove the stain without damaging the fabric.
