Before You Begin Cleaning...
It is important to check the garment label before you start cleaning. The label will tell you recommended cleaning method for the particular type of fabric you’re dealing with. In most cases, dry cleaning is the most effective method for removing nail polish stains from delicate materials.
Cleaning Nail Polish Stains with Detergent
For clothes made of cotton, polyester, and other machine-washable fabrics, detergent is the best way to go. Here's what you should do:
- Scrape off any excess nail polish with a butter knife.
- Mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with two cups of cold water.
- Soak a clean cloth in the solution and apply it to the stained area.
- Gently dab stained area with damp cloth.
- Run the affected area under cold water.
- Repeat as necessary until the stain has been removed.
- If the stain still persists, rub a small amount of liquid detergent into the area and let it sit for a few minutes before washing the garment.
- Wash the skirt according to the instructions on the garment label.
- Dry the garment normally.
Removing Nail Polish Stains with Vinegar
Vinegar is one of the best household solutions for removing stubborn nail polish stains from fabrics. Here's how to use it:
- Combine equal parts white vinegar and cold water in a bowl.
- Soak a cloth in the mixture and dab the stained area with it.
- Let the vinegar solution sit on the stain for 15 minutes.
- Rub the area gently with a damp cloth.
- Rinse the area with cold water.
- If the stain remains, mix a teaspoon of liquid detergent in two cups of cold water. Soak a cloth in the solution and apply it to the stained area.
- Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing.
- Repeat as necessary.
