The first step when cleaning nail polish stains from mules is to gather some supplies. You will need a clean cloth, paper towels, white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, dish soap, and baking soda. If you don’t have all of these items, you may be able to substitute with other household cleaning supplies.
Once you have your supplies ready, begin by blotting the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel. This will help to remove any excess nail polish that has not yet dried. Be sure not to rub the cloth over the stain—this can cause it to spread. Instead, press firmly on the affected area for several seconds.
Next, create a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts water. Dip a clean cloth into the mixture and dab it onto the stained area. Again, do not rub the cloth over the stain. Let the solution sit on the area for 5-10 minutes before blotting it with a dry cloth.
If the vinegar solution does not remove the stain, try an alcohol solution instead. Mix one part rubbing alcohol with one part dish soap. Dip a cloth into solution and blot it onto the stain. Let it sit for another 5-10 minutes before blotting again with a dry cloth.
If the stain is still present, try rinsing the area with baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then, use a damp cloth to gently rub the baking soda into the affected area. Rinse the area with warm water and blot dry with a clean cloth.
The best way to deal with nail polish stains is to prevent them from happening in the first place. Be sure to wear gloves when applying nail polish and keep it away from clothing, furniture, and your mules. If you do accidentally get nail polish on your mules, act quickly and follow the steps outlined above.
