Step 1: Identify Type of Nail Polish Stain

The first step to removing any stain is to determine what type of stain it is. Water-based nail polish remover will only work on water-based nail polishes, while solvent-based removers will do the trick for solvent-based polishes.

Step 2: Test for Colorfastness

It’s important to make sure the nail polish remover you use won’t damage or discolor the fabric. To test for colorfastness, mix a small amount of nail polish remover and water in a separate bowl. Then, rub the solution onto a hidden section of the fabric. If the fabric isn’t discolored after 24 hours, it’s safe to use remover.

Step 3: Blot the Stain

Once you’re sure the remover won't damage the fabric, it’s time to apply it directly to the stain. Start by blotting stain with a paper towel to absorb as much of the nail polish as possible. Then, dampen another paper towel with the remover and gently dab it onto the spot in a circular motion. Continue doing this until the stain begins to lighten. Keep in mind that if stain has been sitting for a long time, you may need to repeat this process several times to get it out.

Step 4: Rinse

Once the stain is gone, rinse the fabric with cold water to remove any remaining remover. Then, launder the fabric as normal and dry as usual. If you’re unable to use a washing machine, you can hand wash the garment in cold water instead.
