What You'll Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Stiff-bristled brush
  • Towels or clean cloths
  • Borax powder (optional)

Step 1: Rub Liquid Dish Soap Into the Stain

Pour some liquid dish soap onto the stained area and use your fingers to rub it into fabric. Allow the soap to sit for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Apply White Vinegar To the Stain

Pour white vinegar over the soap-stained area, then use a stiff-bristled brush to work vinegar in. This helps break down stain, making it easier to remove.

Step 3: Rinse Area with Cold Water

Once you’ve applied the vinegar and brushed it in, rinse the area with cold water. You may need to repeat this step several times to completely remove the stain.

Step 4: Blot the Area Dry

Once you’ve rinsed the stain away, use a towel or clean cloth to blot the area dry. Do not rub the fabric, as this can cause the stain to spread.

Optional Step: Sprinkle on Borax Powder

If the stain is still present after the previous steps, sprinkle on some borax powder and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Then, rinse the area with cold water and blot dry with a clean cloth.

Using a Stain Remover

If the above steps don’t work, you may want to try using a commercial stain remover. Always test this on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first to make sure it won’t damage the fabric.
